Understanding the 5 Phases of Grief

What is the Stages of Grief?

The stages of grief, also known as the “Kübler-Ross Model,” is a collection of emotions that people experience when dealing with death and other types of loss. The five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance – were first identified by Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying.

Denial

Denial is the first stage of grief, a defense mechanism that helps us cope with the pain of loss. During this phase, people may refuse to believe that the loss has occurred or that it will have any long-term effect on their lives. Denial is a natural response and can help people to cope with the shock of the loss.

Anger

Anger is the second stage of grief and can manifest itself in a variety of ways. People may become angry at the situation, at themselves, or at the person who has died. This is a normal and natural part of the grieving process and is a way for people to express their pain and frustration.

Bargaining

The third stage of grief is bargaining. People often find themselves bargaining for more time with the deceased or for a way to undo or avoid the loss. This is an attempt to regain some sense of control over the situation. It can be a way to cope with the pain of loss and to make sense of what has happened.

Depression

Depression is the fourth stage of grief and is a normal reaction to loss. It is a time of sadness and despair in which people may feel overwhelmed by the loss or feel hopeless and helpless. During this stage, people may find themselves withdrawing from activities they once enjoyed and may feel unable to cope with the pain of their loss.

Acceptance

The fifth and final stage of grief is acceptance. During this stage, people are able to accept the reality of the loss and begin to move forward with their lives. Acceptance does not mean that the pain of the loss is gone, but rather that people are able to cope with the loss and find ways to move forward.
